Day 14 - St Brigid's Well and Doolin

O'Connor's Pub Doolin |
After my big day out yesterday, I decided to go for a quieter day today.
It started by dropping my washing into KathCleans in Ennistymon. I dropped it in before Mass to make sure I get it back tomorrow.
Then did the usual Mass and coffee. Had my coffee at Joe's this morning, just to be different.

Went home after that and had a few jobs to do. Had my lunch at home today too.
Then this afternoon I was thinking about somewhere close and I remembered Doolin.

The road I took is one west of that... it went past the Cliffs of Moher |
Google maps kept trying to get me along that road marked in darker blue, but I wanted to go via Liscannor and the Cliffs of Moher - if only to see all the tourists in there!!!
That road also took me past St Brigid's Well and I couldn't resist a visit there!!!
The water in the well was absolutely gushing out, after all the rain they have had there. I had to get right down on the floor to access the water and bless myself, and pray for all the people I usually pray for.... especially those having operations this week and procedures...

St Brigid's Prayer |
Bishop Fintan Monahan has prepared a short video about St Brigid's Well... it's worth a look!
So, moving right along..
The next stop was Doolin and I think it rivals the Cliffs of Moher as a bastion of tourism, except it is more chaotic, as parking spots are at premium and there is often a bit of a battle to get in first! Then there are always the buses! Especially if two buses approach from different directions,.... you can feel them breathing in to get past..

Traffic chaos in Doolin. |
But once you have parked the car and can walk around a bit, it's a lovely little village. Here's a few pics..

O'Connor's pub - Hi Marg! |

Plenty of tourist shopping! |

Love the colours too.. |
I went in to O'Connor's pub and thought I might have my Smithwicks there - but what sort of pub is that - they didn't have Smithwicks. The barmaid said they had a red ale, would I like that??? Well, no thanks!!! It's Smithwicks or nothing. So I had a coffee instead!

Doolin is famous for its live music too, but there was nothing happening at that time of day.
So I walked back to my car, dodging buses and cars that were doing all sorts of manoeuvres . I was going to go down to the port, but it was just too hard with all the traffic, so I decided to just come home. It's a lovely drive from Doolin to Lahinch. You travel for a good bit along the cliff top and the views are spectacular. But you don't really get a chance to look too much, because there are always buses, or trucks, coming towards you, and you have to play dodgem!!!
So that was my quieter day. It was nice to just have a breather. I might go back down to the beach here in Lahinch now, and just breathe in the salt air, and listen to the sounds of the sea. That's my favourite part of the day.
Gosh St Brigid’s well looks overloaded.
ReplyDeleteO’Connors pub brings to mind “The Pub With no beer”.
Love the buildings in these little villages. Col
Yes some villages are really quaint. Doolin is very pretty. Shame about the Smithwicks!!
DeleteI didn’t know anything about St Brigid so went to Wikipedia for a look and saw that she was cracking at turning water into beer 🍺, so maybe O’Connor’s pub could do with a helping hand 🤣. I love the coloured buildings. Enjoy 🇮🇪
ReplyDeleteHaha.. I don't know that Meggsie. You do great research!! I'll have to pray to her more often now that I know that!! 🤣
DeleteAnother beautiful place to visit - shame about all the tourists tho'. St Brigid seems like a good sort all in all and certainly has a lot of visitors. We are ba k home now and are enjoying our coffees again xx
ReplyDeleteYes Doolin was hopping and it was only a Monday. Hate to think what the weekend was like.
DeleteThere's a few funny things happening sth the comments. Yesterday I had an email to say Colleen's was posted, but there was no sign of it. Bit weird, hey??
ReplyDeleteThe ocean sounds glorious Moira_ thanks for sharing the photos and your thoughts. You sure are into Religion but if that is the Irish way, then good on you! Love and blessings, Pam
ReplyDeleteThanks Pam. The ocean is my favourite part of Lahinch.
DeleteHi Moira. I haven’t sent a message for a couple of days but have continued to enjoy your posts! I thought you would like to know that Mary Duffy rsm died yesterday afternoon in the Royal Melbourne hospital. May she rest in peace. You might pray for Helen and the rest of the family when you go to Mass tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteContinue to enjoy your time in such a beautiful part of our earth, Annette.
Thanks Annette. Yes will certainly remember Mary and also Helen. Thanks for letting me know.
DeleteSam and I were both baptised in St Brigid’s churches - his in Northbridge, mine in Marrickville in Sydney. So we will have to put St Brigid’s wells on our Irish itinerary. Katie
ReplyDeleteDefinitely!! St Brigid is really big over here. Almost as big as St Patrick. She is one of the patron saints of Ireland 🇮🇪
