Day 15 AM - Spancilhill and Tulla

Day 15 AM - Spancilhill and Tulla

Cross of Spancilhill

It was a beautiful morning in Lahinch today and the sun was out. The weather was certainly inviting me to get out and explore, so today I set my sights for three places - Spancilhill, Tulla and Craggaunowen.

They were quite close to Six Mile Bridge and Quin, which I did a few days ago, but I didn't want to squeeze too much into one day.

The ocean was beautiful this morning, and the tide was well out..

Tide was out
I'd been warned by my resident  travel guide, young Patrick, that Spancilhill was just a cross road intersection, and so it turned out to be. I have always loved the song, Spancilhill. I think my earliest memory of it was Tommy Moran singing  it in Newman.

Here's a link to it on YouTube, sung by the Dubliners....

The next stop was Tulla... mentioned in the song "Clare, my heart, my home". I could spot the rolling hills of Tulla as I drove in. Beautiful place.  I was hoping to get some lunch there, but the pub didn't open until the night time, and the cafe/bakery didn't have anything I could eat. But I went into the Supavalu, and the lovely lady there said she could make me a plain sandwich - just bread with ham in it.... Perfect!

The town was unspectacular, but I took a couple of pics..

My next stop was Craggaunowen, but I'm going to make a separate post about that. Craggaunowen was a castle and a replica of a Bronze age village. It was fantastic! Check it out in the next post.

After all that was over, I set my Google Maps for Lahinch and headed for home. Only trouble was I kind of missed a few turnoffs, and ended up heading in the wrong direction down the freeway.... Ah well.... I had a unique look at the  Clare countryside as I was led down many little lanes and narrow roads to retrace my steps! But I made it eventually and it's nice to be home now after my big day out!!

  1. Beautiful song, never heard that one before. That’s the trouble with little villages, there is not much open. We had trouble adjusting in America because even though we were in big towns nothing opened until 11 which was really annoying because we are morning people. Col

    1. Yee I know what you mean. Itc was weird to be in an Irish town and the only pub in town wasn't open!!

    1. Yes the weather has been delightful this week. Not sure how long it will last.

  3. Sometimes wrong turns can lead to lovely unexpected places & discoveries. But it’s a shame that we often only realise in retrospect because we are too worried at the time that we are lost and might not find our way. 🙃 It sounds like you enjoyed some of your ‘alternate route’. Katie

    1. Actually I was thinking that at the time. I wasn't in a rush and I was seeing different places.
