Day 2 - Malahide

 Malahide

Malahide

So, once I landed in Dublin and got my luggage etc, I was off to Malahide. Why, you may ask, did I choose Malahide?? Bit of a story here..

Apart from the fact that last time I stayed at the Radisson Blu hotel at the actual airport, it cost €300 for one night!
I wasn't doing that again.

But I don't know if I read it, or just saw the movie on Youtube, but there is this strange story about a American woman who kept seeing the vision of the Malahide Church, even though she doesn't know where it is......

The story concerns a 42-year-old woman, Jenny Cole, whose intense memories of an Irish family that lived in the 1930’s lead her to believe that she was reincarnated.

There's a whole article about it in the Irish Independent and you can view the movie for free on Youtube..

Yesterday’s Children which is dubbed as the compelling true story of a 42-year-old woman who has intense memories of an Irish family that lived in Malahide during the 1930’s.

Anyway, the place has always intrigued me and it's only 20 minutes from the airport, so I got a taxi over here today and will get a taxi back to the airport tomorrow to pick up the car.... and I'm still way ahead financially!!

But it's a lovely little village. I'm staying at the Grand Hotel...

The Grand Hotel Malahide

It's a gracious old lady, but as they say in the classics, it has "faded elegance"!

It's only a few minutes walk down to the town, and they have sectioned off a few streets to make a pedestrian mall.

And who can guess what is the first thing I did when I got there........

My first glass of Smithwicks

The taxi driver was a real mine of information and he recommended the pub called Gibneys - so I always take heed of local knowledge!!!

Gibneys (actually that's the Bottle Shop. The pub was next door but the rain was coming!!)

Then I found a great little coffee shop called Insomnia and had my first decent coffee for a few days.

I went into the Church just to have a look.. That American lady drew that Church without knowing where it was... It's a bit of a strange story, but it's based in truth...  Who knows??

Ok, on that happy note, it's time for tea - I think ! I'm really not too sure where I am with meals etc...

BTW Here's a map of where Malahide is, in relation to the airport at Dublin.

    1. Probably not Meggsie, because I don't have a car yet. I'm picking it up today and then heading straight off to Lahinch.

  3. What a fascinating story - I wonder did the American woman ever visit Malahide. Great find so close to the airport.
Love the 'faded elegance' - picturing threadbare carpet and tatty curtains!

    1. Yes I'm pretty sure she did and she met some of the family who were left. I'll have to re-watch it... I've forgotten a bit...

  4. What a clever idea to stay there Moira. If we ever get to Ireland we might follow your lead. Katie
